Continuing Education

Donations to the Carol Howe Education and Leadership Fund support the annual Martha Browning Bryant Memorial Lecture, a day-long continuing education program committed to advancing and maintaining the skills and knowledge of practicing midwives and other health professionals. This continuing education program continues to be a primary focus of the Foundation’s community efforts and we are proud of the high quality presentations that the program committee has consistently organized. This annual event has served thousands of attendees for over 25 years.

Clinical Skills Training

Each year through the Carol Howe Education and Leadership Fund, the Foundation sponsors student nurse midwives to attend a skills workshop given by the American Academy of Family Physicians known as Advanced Life-Saving Skills in Obstetrics (ALSO).

A 2017 scholarship recipient reflected on their experience:

"I have [been] deeply grateful for the foundation's sponsorship of my ALSO attendance. The course was pivotal in establishing confidence in my ability to manage obstetric emergencies. It affirmed my existing knowledge while providing a concrete approach to applying that knowledge. It was a tremendously valuable learning opportunity in my midwifery education, one that I would not have had access to without the support of the foundation. Thank you!"

Leadership Training

In 2017, donations to the Carol Howe Education and Leadership Fund allowed the Foundation sponsored 4 area midwives to attend the Midwifery Works! Conference - a major professional development conference designed to help midwives acquire and enhance management skills.

Resilience Support

Past awards from the Midwives Accessing Resources and Compassionate Support Fund (MARC’S Fund) have been utilized to develop and offer a weekend self-care retreat for midwives in our community, as well as by a specific practice to access resources and reduce strain during a time of crisis.

"[The] MARC fund grant was awarded to a midwife group in Oregon during a time of hardship. They used the funds to access professional services which helped them to set goals, express grievances, and gain a seat and voice at the table with their practice administration. They have continued to provide excellent care to moms and babies during this process and are happy to once again be back on stable ground and with a stronger voice than before. They are extremely grateful for the support from the MARC fund grant!"
